Theresa Finds Hope
In April of 2006, Theresa, a single mother of two arrived at the HOPE Center in need of assistance. She moved to Illinois in hopes of building a better life for her family. She and her children were residing with her sister in the Northwest Suburbs. However, this living arrangement was temporary as Theresa’s family was unable to provide her and her children with long term housing due to financial reasons.
Theresa recently separated from her husband and was healing from an abusive marriage. She shared her struggles with mental illness along with drug and alcohol abuse. At the time of intake, Theresa was not receiving any mental health services. She stated that she wanted to, but being new to the area, didn’t know where to go. So with that being said, HOPE Center staff directed Theresa to a Mental Health Center for services.
Theresa was also in the process of applying for subsidized housing. It just so happened that a complex, close to her sister’s residence, had subsidized apartments available. Theresa was approved for the program and moved in shortly thereafter.
Fortunately, Theresa’s children were never exposed to the shelter program. Theresa and her children have settled into their new apartment and are well on their way to a better life.
